On Wednesday, April 3rd, Patagonia Boston held a book signing, film screening, and slide chat at their Newbury Street location for Tom Adler’s book Plight of the Torpedo People. The book was compiled as an accouterment to Keith Malloy’s Come Hell or High Water, a film documenting body surfing.

Photographer Chris Burkard, surfer and Patagonia Ambassador Keith Malloy, and North Shore lifeguard, body surfer, and legend Mark Cunningham (Milton, MA native) signed copies of the book, shirts, and coozies, while Burkard also hosted a chat on slides from the film. Over 100 people came out to the event, which was also supported by Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, Quinn Popcorn, and Ocean River Institute.

In an effort to raise awareness about conservation and environmental protection, the Ocean River Institute sold raffel tickets for several framed prints by Chris Burkard as well as Patagonia Down Sweaters, the proceeds going to Burkard and the Ocean River Institute. Following the screening, Burkard, Malloy, and Cunningham, answered questions about the film and their careers.

Eight years ago these fire trucks were lined up parallel to each other and Route 3A, or Mayhew Turnpike. They were placed 100 yards to the north of where they now rest. At some point the owner moved them to face perpendicular to the road, two infront, one at the back. Each of the trucks must be close to 40 years old. One served the town of Woodstock, another a Tri-Town area. The third is unmarked. I’ve passed these vehicles hundreds of times; two, three, even four-times a day, always wondering the same: Who have the saved? What couldn’t they handle? Where did the men come from? What were their names? I often wondered if the times were as simple as the trucks and the men who served on them. Passing these vehicles, my mind harkens back to what those towns must have looked like then. Small, quiet New England hamlets. Places where neighbors knew one another’s business not because they were nosey, but because they cared. Places where a helping hand was always lent, but never expected. I think the majority of those towns still exist in the protected, off-the-beaten-path villages of New Hampshire, where a fresh egg is traded for a cup of sugar or a can of maple syrup. Maybe not, maybe it’s just a hope. And if so, looking at these old firetrucks reminds that at least it did exist at one time.
